Everywhere in our culture the narrative is that menopause is the end, it's awful and your body is out of control. As Byron Katie would ask, "Is it really true?" Or is it a disempowering narrative that's meant to shame women for aging? Throughout our lives women are taught that our bodies are out of control, shameful and turning against us during puberty, pregnancy, child birth and menopause.
The truth is you are not a victim or at the mercy of your hormones. Sadly, women are lacking often basic knowledge about how their bodies work and how best to support and care for our bodies and our wellbeing during the many changes we experience in life.
Symptoms are signals and messengers that something needs to be addressed but often the medical community gaslights, shames and dismisses women. Women are often handed a prescription rather than addressing the root cause.
Often the driver of many of these symptoms is caused by poor diet, too much alcohol, lack of daily movement, stress and stressful thoughts. The truth is as we age we become less metabolically flexible and overly stressed which leads to weight gain, poor sleep, brain fog and many other symptoms.
Explore your mindset
When you spend a lifetime rehearsing negative thoughts about your body over and over they become feelings and then over time they become your reality. I notice all over Facebook and Instagram there are groups for women in midlife and what I find is more often than not they are places where misery loves company. Women rehearsing the disempowering beliefs they've been taught about their bodies. They feel like they have no agency over the symptoms they're experiencing.
Do you find yourself caught in a cycle of complaining about the 30+ symptoms of menopause or aging? What if you instead began with an empowering thought and see if anything changes?
- I am safe in my body
- I am worthy of feeling well and having vitality
- I am experiencing a powerful transition in my life
- I am an empowered woman in flow with my body
- I am an empowered woman nourishing my body through mindset, movement and nutrition
- I am an empowered woman with agency over my body
The truth is your body is incredibly powerful. You are innately wired with the gift of intuition, wisdom and inner knowing, you're wired for community and collaboration and you're a creator.
You likely haven't learned to be at home and at peace in your own body. Midlife is an opportunity to befriend your body and to learn new tools to support your wellbeing.
It's time to come home to your body and connect to your true essence. You can thrive in midlife and beyond despite what the cultural narrative tells you. Together we can rise above the noise that midlife is an ending. Getting curious about your mindset (thoughts and beliefs), incorporating movement and eating a whole food diet are powerful steps to feeling vital in midlife and beyond.
What does your body need?
It's time to view your body as a highly intelligent, finely tuned instrument for creativity, pleasure and contribution. Start by listening to what your body needs. For many women taking a momentary pause to ask, "what do I need?" is an act of courage. Do you need?
- connection with a partner, friend or pet
- nourishing food
- kindness towards yourself
- compassion towards yourself
- to say "no"
- to set a boundary
